Google’s AI Controversy: Tech Giant Accused of Using Rival ChatGPT Data to Train Bard
I can’t believe what I’m hearing! Google, the tech giant that we’ve all come to know and trust, has found itself caught in a major controversy. Recent reports suggest that Google relied heavily on @ShareGPT’s data when training Bard, their rival to ChatGPT. It’s quite a shock, as you can imagine, to see a company like Google in this position.
The Explore page on ShareGPT, which hosted over 112K shared conversations, was taken down last week, and now we know why. It’s absolutely insane to think that Google would do this, especially knowing that many employees within the company were not comfortable with this decision.
A prominent Google AI researcher resigned over this issue, after warning Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and other senior executives that Bard was using data from ChatGPT, which is a big no-no in the world of artificial intelligence. The U.S. Copyright Office (USCO) has concluded that AI-generated works cannot be copyrighted, so technically, these ChatGPT logs are fair game.
When it comes to repurposing code, there’s a fine line. It’s one thing to study the code base and find patterns, but wholesale copying? That’s not something I would expect from a company like Google.
I can’t help but wonder, what’s the harm in ingesting content from the internet, such as Reddit or social media? It’s true that AI-generated content can be an incredibly useful tool that adds value to society, and it’s relatively open, cheap, and highly available. The impact it could have on progress might be comparable to something like the microprocessor.
However, the fact that Google, an “AI first” company with access to more data than any other organization in history, is caught so flat-footed and had to rely on a rival’s data? It screams desperation and panic. It’s disappointing, to say the least.
The Information published a report on Wednesday that included allegations from a former Google AI researcher claiming the company used a rival’s responses to train its own chatbot. Google has since denied that Bard uses ChatGPT data.
As someone who has admired Google for years, I can’t help but feel let down by this news. It’s a reminder that even the most innovative and powerful companies can falter in the race to stay ahead. What’s next for Google and Bard? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: this controversy will leave a lasting impact on the world of AI and the perception of Google as a trustworthy tech leader.
